What is (pediatric) occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy supports people of all ages to participate fully in meaningful everyday activities. Everyone has things that occupy our time, but we often don't think about those occupations until we have trouble doing them. For kids, exploration, play, self-care, interacting with others, sleeping, and learning are some of the occupations that are most meaningful in supporting their development. When kids are having difficulties in these areas, occupational therapy can help.
What is pediatric pelvic health occupational therapy?
Self-care is arguably the most important type of occupation for anyone, of any age. One part of self-care is toileting. Whether an infant is struggling to poop, a toddler is struggling to potty train, or a school-aged kid or teen is dealing with daytime or nighttime incontinence, toileting troubles can wreak havoc on a child, their family, and their ability to engage in meaningful activities.
Pediatric Pelvic Health Occupational Therapy is a big, wordy title referring to the process of figuring out why a child is struggling with bladder or bowel issues and then working toward resolving these issues.
Where are you located?
We are based in Chaska, MN - but all of our services are provided in either a mobile (in-home) format or virtually (via telehealth). This means that you receive care from the comfort and convenience of your own home!
What should I expect at my first visit?
Whether your child will be receiving Direct Therapy Services or you, as a parent/guardian, will be participating in Caregiver Consultation, every session is individualized based on your child's and/or family's needs.
During the first visit, your therapist will collaborate with you and your child on a mission to figure out what factors are contributing to your child’s troubles.
For Direct Therapy Services, it may be beneficial to assess your child’s breath control, posture, strength and mobility, sensory processing, coordination, and pelvic floor area. All of this is performed ONLY with the consent and comfort of both the parent/guardian and child, with thorough discussion of what to expect and confirmation of consent at each step; any portion can be skipped. Pelvic floor assessment is done visually; there will NEVER be any internal pelvic floor assessment or intervention.
What should I expect during treatment?
Once the therapist fully evaluates your child, treatment typically begins with pelvic health education, which lays the foundation for the next steps. Other treatment may include supporting psychosocial factors, making habit/routine changes, and following a home exercise program. Family involvement and carryover is critical in helping your child meet goals.
We use a holistic and individualized approach, addressing both the physical needs and the social-emotional challenges that your child and family face when navigating pelvic health challenges. We strive to support children in achieving comfort, continence, and confidence.
What is the difference between Direct Therapy and Caregiver Consultation?
Direct Therapy Services involve the child themselves, with a parent/guardian present for each session. This can be conducted in the family's home or via telehealth, but the child must both reside and be located in the state of Minnesota at the time of the session.
Consultation-Based Services involve only the parent(s)/guardian(s). This service is most appropriate when a parent/guardian is looking for general guidance and recommendations or when a child is not willing or able to participate in direct therapy. This is also an option for families who reside outside of Minnesota.
Our Introductory Call allows us to provide a recommendation as to which model would be best for your child's needs.
Do you accept insurance?
Grow Pelvic Health is Out-of-Network with all insurance providers. This setup allows us the most freedom and flexibility to provide services in a manner that best serves the needs of each family, rather than having the course of therapy (session structure, what we can treat, how long we spend together, how often we meet, etc.) be dictated by what insurance allows.
Since we are not billing insurance, all of of our time outside of sessions is devoted to ensuring the highest quality of individualized care so that each of your sessions is as productive and helpful as possible. For an evaluation, we are spending several hours before and after the evaluation time reviewing your intake paperwork and putting the "puzzle pieces" together to form a treatment plan. For each 60 minute follow-up session, you can expect that we are spending 1-2 additional hours ensuring you have what you need home program-wise, planning for the next session, and/or collaborating with your child's other providers (pediatrician, other therapists, school, etc.). We find that this approach helps kiddos make progress faster and, in many cases, ends up being more economical for families in the end.
For Direct Therapy Services ONLY: We accept HSA/FSA payment. Upon request, we can provide a superbill for families to submit to insurance for Out-of-Network benefits.
